Kidnappers Demand 50 BTC Ransom for 64-Year-Old South African Businessman
Kidnappers are reportedly demanding a whopping 50 BTC for the release of a prominent South African businessman.
According to a report by News24, Liyaqat Parker (64) was kidnapped at gunpoint by five men as he was driving into the basement of his business premises in the Parow district of Cape Town on Monday morning.
News24 outlet reports that a manhunt for the kidnappers is underway, while rumors have circulated of a ransom demand in Bitcoin. A senior source with direct knowledge of the case said the ransom demand was 50 Bitcoin, which translated to $308,665.25 according to market price as at press time.
According to the sources, the kidnappers made the demand for the hefty ransom via email on Tuesday. However, a spokesman for the Parker family, Walid Brown‚ has denied the rumors stating that “the family is waiting for the kidnappers to contact them. They have not received contact from anybody demanding anything”.
Police would not comment on the ransom demand stating that the case was “highly sensitive” and was being investigated by provincial detectives.
“Please bear with us as we cannot divulge details of the investigation that has yet to be presented before a court of law‚” Police spokesman Captain FC van Wyk said.
Parkers’ family have appealed for the release of the businessman who is a board member and founding member of several companies.
Parkers family reached out to the media saying “Our father and brother is an elderly man, so we also appeal to those who may be involved or know persons who may be connected with this crime, to just please release him unharmed before his health deteriorates.”
