Facebook Delves Deeper into the Crypto Space, by Appointing new Head of Blockchain
Facebook has appointed Evan Cheng as Director of Blockchain Engineering at the powerhouse social media company.
Cheng was previously responsible for directing the Programming Languages & Runtimes at the company. Cheng will now be a lead builder as Facebook develops its blockchain future.
These moves suggest that Facebook is starting to take blockchain technology more seriously, appointing its own dedicated executive position.
Cheng had his previous position for almost three years and worked for Apple for almost 10 years before that. He is an advisor to a series of blockchain startups/projects, including Zilliqa and ChainLink, and regularly tweets about blockchain.
Back in May Facebook appointed David Marcus, its Vice President in charge of Messaging Products, as leader of a new blockchain unit.
Cheng’s re-appointment comes as rumors swirl that Facebook might be looking at buying up cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase.
Such claims are more smoke than fire for now, but with the company’s recent blockchain-centric moves, it wouldn’t be the most surprising acquisition, though it would most certainly be a blockbuster deal.
