Eyeo GmbH, the developer of Adblock Plus, now uses the blockchain technology in its Trusted News browser extension.

They introduced a beta Chrome extension, Trusted News that will use blockchain to help verify if a site is reliable. Once added to the browser, the extension shows a small window with a brief description of a news source that contains the labels “trustworthy”, “unknown”, “clickbait” or even “satire”.

Initially, it uses four established sites (PolitiFact, Snopes, Wikipedia and Zimdars’ List), but the final plan is to decentralize the database with the Ethereum blockchain and use token mechanisms similar to games to reward everyday users for submitting feedback while protecting against trolls.

The database, in the long run, will move to Ethereum blockchain. The organization also plans to issue MetaCert tokens to track compensation and avoid the danger of the horrible characters on the control screen or ruin the information.

The company’s ecosystem director, Ben Williams, said that Trusted News incorporated a selection in which clients can criticize certain classifications, including contesting them if they do not agree with a certain classification. In addition, he said:

“They can say ‘hey I don’t feel like this site should be listed as biased because whatever’. And we’re going to use that feedback to make the product better. And then the next step is to decouple that from any server, and from any third party, and give it directly to the blockchain. So that that feedback can live on its own in that place and so that good feedback can be prized and rewarded among users, and people who are providing bad feedback won’t be. So that is the next step.”

Williams emphasized that the project is simply in its trial stages, and that Eyeo wants to determine whether the product is something users find helpful.
The extension should remain free and not include an Adblock-style white list that makes the sites immune to criticism.
